Exploring Los Cabos, Mexico: A Perfect Blend of Art, Cuisine, and Family-Friendly Activities

Updated: Oct 16, 2024

Last March, my husband and I escaped to Los Cabos, Mexico. This was our second time visiting the destination so I want to share my insights with you.

Los Cabos is easy to get to from Vancouver – it's just a four hour direct flight on either WestJet or Air Canada. From LAX, it’s a 3-hour direct flight and you have more airline options to choose from: Delta, American, or Alaska. You’ll arrive at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).

It’s a perfect escape from the winter weather and a great way to get some vitamin D. The perfect time to visit Cabo is November to May, where temperatures range from 14C to 32C. During summer, from June to September, temperatures range from 24C to 34C.

After passing through customs, immigration, and luggage claim, be sure to avoid any type of contact with Timeshare. They will do and say anything to get your attention. We recommend booking the transfers to and from the airport ahead of time, making sure to exit the airport completely as they are located outside of the terminal.

There are two different towns to choose from when booking your stay: Cabo San Lucas, which tends to be the center of action for the younger crowd and more active tourists, and San Jose del Cabo, a very nice, charming town with lots of art in every stone street. Every Thursday during winter there is a street artist market full to get you immersed in the regional art culture.

You will find hotels for different budgets, but note that the destination is not a cheap one. From bed and breakfast to all-inclusive and luxury accommodation brands located in Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo or along The Corridor that connects both towns you will find a wide variety of hotel options. If you are looking for night life or a party experience, consider staying close to the centre of Cabo San Lucas. The corridor is more private and calmer. This is also a good destination for surfers and there are resorts that are ready to receive them.

Some activities and excursions every visitor can experience are jet skiing, sport fishing, scuba diving tours, sunset sailing, or, during the wintertime, whale-watching excursions. Those seeking cultural enrichment can explore the region's rich history and art scene with visits to museums, art galleries, and historic landmarks. In Cabo you will also find world-class golf courses, indulgent spas, and Michelin-star chefs and restaurants that beckon to luxury travelers. For travelers seeking thrills, cultural immersion, or tranquil rejuvenation, Los Cabos presents an unforgettable spectrum of experiences that will leave you invigorated and inspired. We were blessed to see some grey and humpback whales in the Cortez Sea and had a great time at the museum of snorkeling; their tour guide was very knowledgeable. This is also a scuba diving destination - the coral barrier is located just one hour from San Jose and is one of the best-kept secrets in North America.

The food is A1! There is a good variety of restaurants, and the service what you’d expect with the warm, Latin Mexican culture. The destination has also become a destination for generations of traveling foodies as several local restaurants are included in Michelin’s first-ever guide for Mexico. The region has attracted a constellation of Michelin-awarded chefs who have established culinary outposts that blend innovation with tradition. We stayed at Gran Velas Los Cabos and reserved a dinner at Cocina de Autor prepared by two Michelin Starred chefs, Francisco Sixto and Sydney Schutt. This restaurant is the winner of the coveted Michelin one-star and epitomizes creative fine dining with its stylish decor and ocean views. The menu is crafted by two-Michelin-star chef Sidney Schutte, featuring unexpected pairings of fresh local ingredients and wines from around the world. Another great dining recommendation is Humo at Zadun at the Ritz Carlton Collection property.  Humo is set in the heart of the property with an open kitchen and views of the Sea of Cortez. Firewood will be present in every dish. We also found some Peruvian-inspired dishes! The menu is well complemented by a wide global selection of wines and the service was superb. These acclaimed restaurants, alongside a burgeoning culinary scene, have solidified Los Cabos as a gastronomic mecca, attracting food connoisseurs from around the world. Yet, the true essence of Los Cabos gastronomy lies in the corner taquerías, family-owned restaurants, and bustling markets where the soul of the region's cuisine is celebrated with every bite.

Part of the experience was to do site inspections on various properties so we can recommend the best fit for your preferences and budget. If you wish to explore spending your next vacation or a long weekend in San Jose del Cabo/Los Cabos, you can connect with me for more assistance.
